Student Visas: Impact of New Regulations

The UK continues to welcome international students, but the regulatory framework governing student immigration has tightened considerably. These changes reflect the Government's aim to ensure the student route is not used as a backdoor to settlement.

Graduate Route Changes

The White Paper proposes reducing the Graduate visa duration from 2 years to 18 months.

While this change has not yet been implemented, students should be aware that the post-study work landscape may change during their studies.

Planning for post-graduation employment should begin well before completing studies.

Dependant Restrictions

Since July 2025, rules governing student dependants have been clarified and in some cases tightened.

Partners of students wishing to accompany them to the UK now need to demonstrate English language proficiency, and the requirements for evidencing genuine relationships have been enhanced.

Proposed Higher Education Levy

The Government has proposed a levy on international student fees, which would require primary legislation to implement.

This would increase the overall cost of UK education for international students. While not yet in force, prospective students should factor potential additional costs into their planning.
