Skilled Worker Visa Changes: New Requirements from July 2025

The Skilled Worker visa route has undergone the most substantial changes in the 2025 reforms. From 22 July 2025, the rules governing who can be sponsored for skilled work in the UK have changed significantly.

New Skills Threshold

The skills occupation threshold has been raised from RQF Level 3 (A-level equivalent) to RQF Level 6 (degree level).

This means approximately 180 occupations that were previously eligible for sponsorship are no longer available to new applicants.

Only jobs requiring at least an undergraduate degree level of skill will now qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship.

Salary Requirements

The general salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas has increased to GBP 41,700 as of 22 July 2025.

Employers must also meet occupation-specific going rates, which may be higher depending on the role.

All salaries are calculated based on a 37.5-hour working week and must be pro-rated correctly for different working patterns.

The Temporary Shortage List

A new Temporary Shortage List (TSL) has been introduced for medium-skilled roles (RQF Levels 3-5) that are experiencing critical shortages.

Currently listing 52 occupations, the route comes with significant restrictions: workers sponsored under this list cannot bring dependants to the UK and do not benefit from salary discounts.

The list will be reviewed in Spring 2026, with all roles automatically removed unless the Migration Advisory Committee recommends their retention.

Care Worker Route Closure

From 22 July 2025, new applications for Health and Care Worker visas in the adult social care sector are no longer accepted from overseas applicants.

Those already sponsored in England must work for their employer for at least three months before switching to another employer in the sector.

From 22 July 2028, switching to adult social care sponsorship will be prohibited entirely.

Transitional Protections

Importantly, individuals already sponsored under the Skilled Worker route at RQF Levels 3-5 before the changes took effect can maintain their immigration status, extend their visas, and progress to settlement.

The Home Office has confirmed these transitional arrangements to protect those already in the UK.
